Report: 196 environmental activists killed worldwide

Bogota

According to the nongovernmental organization Global Witness, at least 196 environmentalists were killed worldwide last year. The most dangerous country for environmentalists was Colombia, followed by Brazil, Mexico and Honduras, the group said in its annual report. Eighty-five percent of all killings were recorded in Latin America.

“As the climate crisis accelerates, those who bravely speak out to protect our planet are facing violence, threats and murder,” says report author Laura Furones. “Our data shows that the number of murders remains alarmingly high and is simply unacceptable.”

Activists, especially those campaigning against mining, fishing, forestry, agriculture, road construction and hydroelectric power plants, live dangerous lives. Most crimes go unpunished. “The government cannot remain silent. It must take decisive action to protect activists and address the causes of violence against them,” Furones demands. “Activists are essential to prevent and repair the damage caused by climate-destroying industries.”
