00:01. NATO chief: decisions on Kiev’s use of long-range missiles are the responsibility of each country
Any specific decisions regarding Ukraine’s use of Western long-range missiles on Russian territory should be taken by individual allies, outgoing NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Monday in an interview with London’s LBC radio.
It is up to individual allies to make specific decisions about how their weapons may be used. Allies have different policies on this matter.
Stoltenberg said.
He added that it is very important that NATO members consult closely on this issue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long called on the United States and other Western allies to allow Ukrainian troops to use the long-range missiles they have been given to strike targets inside Russia, in order to increase pressure on Moscow and persuade it to end the war.
Washington has so far refused to issue such authorization for fear of escalation that could lead to direct conflict with Russia. However, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised last week in Kiev to “urgently” consider Ukraine’s military requests.
The US delivered a small number of ATACMS systems to Ukraine last September, with a range of approximately 270 km.
