Qualcomm to launch new Snapdragon X-series chip to power more affordable AI computers later this year: report

Qualcomm could soon announce a new version of its Snapdragon X-series chipset at the Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin (Berlin International Radio Exhibition) 2024 event on Tuesday. The new Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 model is expected to power the “second wave” of AI computers, also known as Copilot+ computers. The chipset is said to deliver 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Lenovo, Asus, and Acer have already begun listing new laptop models with the chipset. The first laptop to feature the processor is expected to be the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5.

New version of Snapdragon X-series chipset allegedly powers AI computers

According to a report by Winfuture, the new AI-powered laptops with the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 are likely to launch in the last quarter of the year. Some of these laptops could be unveiled at IFA 2024, but it is worth noting that Qualcomm has not yet announced a new version of the Snapdragon X Plus chipset.

The publication claims that the new variant of the Snapdragon X-series chipset will have eight cores instead of the 10 or 12 cores in the previous variants. It is said to offer a maximum clock speed of 3.4 GHz. The chipset is also expected to deliver weaker GPU benchmark scores compared to the older version.

Lenovo will reportedly launch the first Copilot+ PC with the new Snapdragon X chipset, dubbed the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5, at IFA 2024. The laptop was spotted on Amazon Germany’s website. It features a 14-inch WUXGA OLED screen and comes in a grey colour. The listed device has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of built-in SSD storage. It is powered by a 57Wh battery.

The report also claimed that the new Snapdragon X-series chipset will also feature in the Vivobook S15 and ProArt PZ13. The Acer Swift Go 14 is another laptop to feature the new processor variant.

While the new version of the Snapdragon X-series chipset will power several new laptops, Intel is also preparing to launch the Lunar Lake chipset, which is expected to offer performance of up to 67 TOPS.

Speaking about how the company plans to maintain its market share, Mike Roberts, vice president and global head of product marketing, partners and technology at Qualcomm, told Gadgets 360, “I think our primary advantage is performance per watt. Performance is great, but if my battery life is bad, nobody’s going to want to use it. And to me, that’s the core of who we are as a mobile company. So we have a sustainable ARM advantage over x86.”
