Remember that Xiaomi concept camera phone that had an exposed 1-inch sensor and a mount for interchangeable lenses? It was based on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra that had been modified to accept Leica M-mount lenses. It was cool, but it was just a concept and never made it to mainstream consumers.

If you have DIY skills, you can do it yourself, like in this video from the channel Mod and shoot demonstrates. It starts with the Sharp Aquos R6, a Japan-exclusive 2021 Android smartphone that has a 1-inch, 20MP sensor.

Of course, the 19mm Leica Summicron lens had to go, and it was replaced by the C-mount. Originally used on 16mm cameras, this mount is now more common on security cameras. With the right adapter, this setup can use lenses from many other cameras, as you’ll see in the video. There’s one big downside to this solution – two, actually, if you count the extra bulk – namely that the autofocus doesn’t work, so you have to focus manually.

The creator of this mod is planning a similar modification for the 2022 Sharp Aquos R7, which will feature a higher-resolution 47-megapixel 1” sensor (with 11MP binary mode) and new video modes, such as 8K recording.

The Mod and Shoot Instagram account has several videos and a photo taken with the modified R6, so head over and check it out.
