The links with school education are obvious, since “Uncertainty. Mickiewicz in Love” directed by Waldemar Szarek (also one of the three screenwriters) was already advertised by the Ministry of National Education and TVP (the film’s producer) as an aid to Polish language classes at the time of its release. There are even suggestions for topics for discussion after the film.
In reality, however, this story about the power of first love, which Adam Mickiewicz experienced when he fell in love with Maryla Wereszczakówna, can only be useful for Polish teachers to conduct a test during class: indicate the quotes from the poet’s work used in the film. There are many of them – for example: “Where did the Lithuanians return from?” – because the filmmakers decided to show that Mickiewicz took his rhymes from life.
Adam Mickiewicz wanted to duel for Maryla Wereszczakówna
It is impossible to say more about Mickiewicz after the film. His image is colorless, fitting well into the standard of school readings. His love for Maryla is only platonic, not only because she was already engaged to Puttkamer, but also because it is not appropriate to shock students with eroticism. In reality it was different, although the most heated and dramatic event between Mickiewicz and Maryla happened later, when he had an affair with a married woman in Kaunas, and Maryla was already Puttkamer’s wife. The film does not show this; from the later events, the creators only took advantage of the poet’s intention to duel with his rival.
The Venice Film Festival is over. What the artists are shouting about
The Venice Film Festival loves Pedro Almodóvar. He has won the most important awards here, including this year’s award for his film “In the Next Room”. But Venice can also attract other great artists, which is why there are so many interesting films here.
“Uncertainty. Mickiewicz in love. Bathing half-naked Świtezy girls and Father Robak with a shotgun
The action takes place more than a year earlier. Mickiewicz spends his vacation at the Wereszczak estate, spending time eating, flirting with Maryla and chatting with his friends – Zane and Wereszczaka. True, they contain the guiding thread of the Philomath Society, echoes of political events and the desire for patriotic action, but these are just words. Dialogues without tension do not bring the film to life.
