In 2020, the KO’s first presidential candidate was the current Senate Speaker, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, and when – due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic – the first round of the presidential election on 10 May was not held, the KO changed its candidate and nominated the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski.
Trzaskowski came in second in the first round, gaining 30.46% of the vote and entered a runoff with Andrzej Duda (43.50%). In the second round, the incumbent president was re-elected with 51.03% of the vote, to Trzaskowski’s 48.97%.
2025 presidential election: KO and PiS still haven’t named their candidates
The mayor of Warsaw is likely to be a KO candidate in the 2025 presidential election. But so far the Civic Coalition has not announced its candidate, as has PiS. So far, only the Confederation has officially named a presidential candidate – with the support of this formation, Sławomir Mentzen, the leader of New Hope, will fight for the presidency.
There has been speculation for months that Prime Minister Donald Tusk could represent a knockout in the presidential election – the politician already ran for president in 2005, but lost in the second round to Lech Kaczyński.
