In light of the severe damage caused by floods in southwestern Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called his cabinet into an emergency meeting on Monday morning. Tusk said he had prepared a decree declaring a state of disaster, but the decision must be approved by the cabinet.
Continuous rains have caused flooding in southwestern Poland, bordering the Czech Republic. In the small town of Klodzko in Lower Silesia, entire streets were flooded and one person died. The town of Glucholazy in the Opole region has been devastated by flooding.
On Monday night, the small town of Nysa in the Opole region was particularly affected. Water from the Glacier Neisse, a tributary of the Oder, flowed into the emergency room of the local hospital, PAP reported. A total of 33 patients, including children and pregnant women, were taken to safety there by inflatable boats.
