This is the result of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling regarding scoring in gymnastics competitions.
The referees accepted the American coach’s protest
CAS accepted Romania’s request and invalidated the American coach’s appeal, after which the judges changed the scores and third place – at the expense of Ana Barbosu – went to Chiles.
Barbosu, who was initially third, fell from the podium after coach Cecile Landi questioned the scores given to Chiles, who was in fifth place. After the protest, the referees added 0.1 points to the American’s score, which guaranteed her advancement to the medal position.
The Court changed the final classification
According to CAS, the protest from the American side was filed after the minute had elapsed, which is regulated by the rules of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
The Court concluded that the original order should therefore be restored, with Barbosu third, his compatriot Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chiles fifth.
Chiles is devastated by the situation
The court ordered that the “original order” be restored but left it up to the FIG to decide who would receive the bronze medal, and the federation said it would respect the verdict and return Barbosu to third place.
In turn, the Romanian Olympic Committee, in response to the CAS decision, demanded the award of three bronze medals.
Chiles – even before the IOC presented its position – wrote that she was devastated by the whole situation and “disappears from social media for the sake of her mental health”, and the American federation (USA Gymnastics) described the CAS decision as “devastating”.
