The clubs were given brand new stadiums (let’s emphasize once again: with public money), but at the same time the children and young people of these clubs had nowhere to train. The training centers, if they existed, were built years after the end of the Euro. If you want to know one of the reasons for football’s subsequent failures in major tournaments, it is the confusion of the order: we built philharmonic halls and we don’t care that there are no music schools. To be clear: Columbines were not and will not be the answer to this question. Orliki are used to help 40-year-old parents move around after spending eight hours in front of the computer. This is not where the next Lewandowskis and Błaszczykowskis will grow up.
Why are the Olympics a bad idea?
It has long been known that the International Olympic Committee is the one who earns the most from the Olympic Games. The host country bears the majority of the costs. I don’t know how well thought out the idea put forward by Tusk and Minister Sławomir Nitras is, but I do know that the Paris Games cost almost 10 billion dollars. A lot, even if it could have been done more cheaply in Poland. By the way, I wonder what Minister Domański thought when he heard his boss’s announcement.
Anyway: we live in a country where many juniors have nowhere to train, and there is a haunted facility near Warsaw that perfectly illustrates why the Olympic Games in Poland are a bad idea.
The Pruszków velodrome, built at a cost of PLN 100 million (public money), is drowning in debt, with arrears estimated at PLN 20 million. In February, the court tried to auction the track for PLN 71 million. There were no takers. It was thanks to this investment that silver-plated cyclist Daria Pikulik waited until April for her bike and received the suit just before the start in Paris.
Why does Tusk want the Olympics?
When Andrzej Duda announced the organization of the games, it sounded ridiculous and terrible, it simply smelled like organizing more companies using public money that PiS idiots could be stuck in. But if Tusk says so, there is something behind it.
The advantages of building pavilions and stadiums for champions, rather than facilities for young athletes, are obvious. The former will be built before the next elections. The latter will yield results in many years.
However, there is something more to the idea of organizing the Olympics. It seems that the Prime Minister is learning from his mistakes. He wanted to liquidate the CPK, but it turned out that the public opinion needed a big project that would satisfy its aspirations. And the CPK will be established in some form.
The announcement of the Olympic Games is intended to stir up the same emotions. Paris can, Los Angeles can, but Warsaw can’t? When Tusk was prime minister, he talked about providing hot tap water. He sent those who had visions to a doctor. And then PiS came to power and it turned out that the public needed big projects. And it doesn’t matter if they actually make sense.
— The problem with politicians is that they are only interested in sports around big events – Aleksander Kwaśniewski said a few days ago on Onet. Let’s hope the president is right and that the enthusiasm for hosting the games in Poland will die down by the end of today’s press conference.
