Normal storage of eggs may cause them to spoil faster, warns an expert

Eggs have a surprisingly long shelf life, but that doesn’t mean they taste as good two weeks after purchase.

While some people prefer the kitchen counter or the ceramic egg stand, often in the shape of a chicken, the refrigerator is the favorite of many egg fans.

Whether bought to eat on their own or whipped up into a delicious cake, proper storage label is essential to keep eggs as long as possible.

But one food expert has urged people to recognize a common mistake they could be making when putting eggs in the fridge.

Jason Webb, CEO of Electronic Temperature Instruments (ETI), told Wren Kitchens that one shelf in particular is problematic for our health.

With 1.3 billion tonnes of food wasted each year worldwide, Wren Kitchens has sought answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about food storage.

Jason Webb told the kitchen experts that longevity is all about how well the eggs actually last in the fridge door.

He said: “Eggs are recommended to be refrigerated at around 4C to keep them fresh and safe for consumption.

“However, storing eggs in refrigerator door storage trays that are frequently opened and closed can cause fluctuations and increases in temperature, which accelerates egg spoilage.”

Jason continued: “With this continuous temperature disturbance, the temperature of the eggs rises from the optimal 4C, and if it continues, it can cause the risk of bacteria such as salmonella.”

This bacteria can cause foodborne illness or food poisoning and occurs when Salmonella passes through the shell into the egg.

However, it can be easily avoided by considering alternative food storage methods and also by cooking eggs to a certain temperature before eating.

According to the experts at British Lion Eggs, “nothing beats the original box” when it comes to keeping eggs fresh at home.

They said: “Not only does the box protect the eggs, it also shows a best before date that you can go back to whenever you’re in doubt.”

As for why a carton is better than keeping eggs loose in the fridge, eggs have tiny pores that allow bacteria from other foods and odors like food odors and flavors to seep in over time.

British Lion Eggs experts claimed: “For best quality and safety, you want to ensure your eggs stay at a constant temperature below 20C, so try to avoid moving them too often between very cold and very warm temperatures, such as between a car and a fridge or a fridge and warm kitchen.”
