Three days after voting to disqualify Sylt’s mayor, Nicholas Hackl (independent), the municipal voting committee met on Wednesday (5pm) at the town hall in Westerland. “Then the previous provisional voting result will be determined and therefore official – and Nicholas Hackl will be placed in temporary retirement,” Florian Kurti, spokesman for the municipality of Sylt, told the German news agency dpa.
On Sunday, 4,342 citizens of the Sylt community voted in favor of deselection of Hackl, while 860 voted against.
On July 18, local politicians decided to launch a recall process against Sylt’s full-time mayor, Hackl. He had led the administration on the North Sea island since 2015 and wanted to return to the executive chairmanship after surviving burnout.
Hackl calmly accepted the vote on Celt
Politicians accused the Selter native of, among other things, years of budget misery, lack of communication, lack of trust and inefficiency in his administrative work.
Hackl himself accepted his selection calmly: next week he wanted to go to a monastery in Bavaria and spend at least three months there, the 50-year-old told the German news agency DPA. According to municipal regulations, a new mayor must be elected within six months at the latest. Until then, Carsten Kirkham (CDU) will be in charge of official business on the island.
