The Wimbledon tournament announced this Wednesday the 10th that it will replace the line judges with an electronic system, changing a 147-year-old tradition. These lines judges, who dress in a very particular way, are as much a part of the tournament scene as the all-white uniform that tennis players must wear.
But Wimbledon is now aligning itself with other competitions around the world, adopting a shift that aims to “balance tradition and innovation.”

The ATP announced in 2023 the adoption of the so-called electronic line (ELC) from 2025 throughout the circuit to “optimize precision and consistency between tournaments”, and now the change has been announced for next year at Wimbledon.
“This technology will be on all courts during the tournament and qualifying matches and will be used to indicate ‘out’ and ‘fault’, which until now were the work of the linesmen,” says the statement published this Wednesday in the All England. Club, host of the tournament.
The 2025 edition of Wimbledon will be played from June 30 to July 13.
