The second generation is even larger, even more spacious, much more modern and more dynamic. For the first time in history, it also features a PHEV hybrid drive, i.e. charging via a plug-in socket. This alone means that a large family SUV can be more economical than ever before and with zero emissions for more than 100 km.
The 842,000 units sold in 60 global markets are confirmation enough to say that the Czech brand’s flagship SUV is not only a successful family car, but also an ideal car. Now it’s time for its second incarnation.
Visible changes include a redesigned front fascia and completely new headlights. They are narrower, better emphasize the silhouette of the car and have crystal filling. But above all, its most advanced version features hexagonal Matrix LED modules that shine at a distance of 500 meters.
The characteristic “nose”, i.e. the convex relief, has disappeared from the mask. In addition, the new Skoda Kodiaq has gained elegance thanks to less sharp shapes and smoother surfaces. This is the latest innovation in the world of automotive fashion. This adds elegance and sophistication to the car. And given the few extra centimeters in length, the body is even more proportionate. However, it not only looks fresh, but also improves aerodynamics. And this is the most important element in the entire automotive puzzle. The lower the air resistance, the better the performance. The better the performance, the lower the fuel consumption. As a result, the car is more fuel efficient and in the PHEV hybrid version, it can travel approximately 120 km on electricity alone.
The Skoda Kodiaq, which is 6 cm longer (4.758 m), means more space in the cabin. Especially in the third row of seats and with the boot increased by 75 liters. It can now hold a record 910 liters.
All versions with DSG
The interior is also unrecognizable. Designed from scratch, it is elegant and functional. First of all, the automatic transmission lever has disappeared from the center console. It has been moved to the steering column. This is because the new Kodiaq is only available with the DSG automatic transmission.
An optional interior feature of the new SUV is a 13-inch central infotainment screen, complemented by a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and an optional head-up display. Below the infotainment screen are the new Smart Dials. These are three multifunction buttons with digital displays in the middle, which make it easy to access selected functions. The two outer ones control the temperature, heating and ventilation of the seats. The central display is configured with the infotainment system and the functions are switched by holding the button down.
Depending on what we want to set, simply press once and turn once. This is especially important when, while driving, we want to quickly change the air flow, turn on the seat heating or change the driving mode.
Below there is storage space and a 15-watt cooled Phone Box, a place for inductive charging of smartphones. Other passengers can use four 45W USB-C ports.
Drive like an electrician
The Skoda Kodiaq is built on the improved MQB Evo platform. This made it possible to use new drives. In addition to the traditional 2.0 TSI petrol engine with 204 hp, Skoda has not forgotten about the diesel engine either. The 2.0 TDI diesel with 150 or 193 hp has very low fuel consumption and, consequently, clean exhaust gases.
The traditional combustion engines are complemented by a new version of the plug-in hybrid drive with a total output of 204 hp. Thanks to a battery that has been reduced by half (25.7 kWh), it now offers a range of more than 100 km in zero-emission mode. This means that thanks to the PHEV drive, the Kodiaq combines the best of combustion and electric technologies, and it is up to us which drive we want to use and when.
Dynamic suspension
For the first time, the Kodiaq also features mild hybrid technology. It was used in the case of the 1.5 TSI engine with an output of 150 hp. This is the latest generation of EA 211 evo2 units. Not only does it operate on the fuel-efficient Miller cycle (delayed closing of the intake valves) and is equipped with a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, but also at low load the active cylinder management system (ACT+) can disconnect two of them, reducing fuel consumption.
To enhance the driving experience, the Kodiaq can also be equipped with DCC Plus dynamic adaptive suspension. The new version uses two independently controlled valves that separate the rebound and compression work of the suspension, thus ensuring faster and more precise damping. The system works faster and more effectively, ensuring greater comfort while maintaining the same ground clearance as the standard version.
They analyze and predict
As befits a flagship SUV, the package of driver assistance and safety systems is comprehensive. All systems have been modernised and improved. Side Assist has a greater vehicle detection range and Traffic Jam Assist now offers a clearer view of adjacent vehicles and is linked to Adaptive Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. And when linked to navigation, it anticipates curves and can slow down when the situation and terrain require it.
Functionality squared
A spacious interior, comfortable seats and a spacious trunk are the key elements that influence functionality. But there are several new elements on board the new Skoda Kodiaq that can make driving more enjoyable. These include: a central armrest in the rear seat with integrated tablet holder, a glove box with cup holders and a touchscreen wiper that has its special place.
With all this in mind, an infotainment system that is always online and the possibility of over-the-air software updates (OTA) do not seem surprising. It simply exists and works quickly and intuitively.
The new Skoda Kodiaq is a complete car. Spacious, dynamic and well-designed. As befits the brand’s flagship SUV, it is modern and uses all the best Skoda has to offer. And thanks to the new drivetrain, the PHEV is also economical.
