A five-episode production starring, among others, Magdalena Różczka, Borys Szyc, Michał Żurawski, Konrad Eleryk, inspired by the tragic story of the sinking of the Polish ferry, will premiere in 2025.
10 months of preparation, eight-month filming period, 105 shooting days, over 120 actors, 3,000 extras, 2,000 vehicles (including 200 trucks), 700 tons of water, 1 kilometer of rain showers and crossings, 70 different locations, almost 200 people involved in post-production and 140 crew members constantly working on the series – this is what “Heweliusz” looks like in numbers.
The story of the Polish ferry disaster, which is primarily a story about people – about their grief, search for truth and justice, struggles with the state apparatus – raised the bar for all the creators and cast.
What will the series “Heweliusz” be about? Netflix?
The sinking of the Jan Heweliusz ferry on the night of January 13–14, 1993, was the largest civilian maritime disaster in Poland. Of the 64 people on board, only nine crew members survived. The remaining fifty-five were swallowed up by the sea. At the time of the disaster, the Baltic Sea was two degrees Celsius. The wind was blowing so strongly that the Beaufort scale was not sufficient.
“Heweliusz” is a story about how one event changed the lives of all the characters. However, the catastrophe is just a steering wheel, a pretext for a story about human pain, loss, mourning, but also about the fight against a dysfunctional state, above all, for the good name of the dead and for their dignity.
