National football goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen may have suffered a serious knee injury during FC Barcelona’s 5-1 (3-0) win at Villarreal FC. The 32-year-old landed on his right foot while defending a corner kick just before the break and fell to the grass. The Barca captain had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Coach Hansi Flick, who achieved his sixth win in his sixth league game, looked on with concern.
A diagnosis was still pending on Sunday evening. Ter Stegen’s side initially only reported a change in goalkeeper due to injury.
The former Bundesliga professional has become the new number one in the German national team following the resignation of Manuel Neuer. The DFB selection will play in October’s Nations League in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against the Netherlands.
