Mumbai (Maharashtra):
It’s been 28 years since filmmaker Sanjay Bhansali made his directorial debut with Khamoshi: The Musical!. Released on August 9, 1996, Khamoshi starred Actors Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala in lead roles. The film follows a talented small-town girl, Annie (Koirala), who has dreams of a singing career and cares for her deaf and mute parents, Joseph and Flavy. There’s handsome music lover Raj (Salman) who wants to help Bella realize her dreams, but her family is reluctant to send her out into the world, which they don’t think would accept them.
Celebrating the film’s 28th anniversary, Bhansali Productions shared a short video on social media that summarizes the beautiful glimpses of Khamoshi: The Musical. They further explained it as, “Here’s a timeless story of love and music! Besides, in a 28-year career KhamoshiSanjay Leela Bhansali delivered several notable projects such as Musta, Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastani and Gangubai Kathiawadi. This year he got to know the world of OTT with his web show Heeramandi: Diamond Bazaar.
Between 1920 and 1947, when the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan, the first season of the exuberant story takes place in the Heeramand area of British India’s Lahore, a milieu of tawaifs. Like Japanese geishas, tawais were trained in music and dance and were courted by the nobility. The show centers around Heeramand’s scheming queen Mallikajana (Manisha Koirala) and her vengeful niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who has ambitions to take her aunt’s place.
The show also features Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and Taha Shah Badussha.
The series will return for a second season.
Expanding on the series, Bhansali said in a Netflix statement, “It takes a lot to make a series. This has taken a lot. After Gangubai [Berlinale title ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’] published in February 2022, since then I have been working every single day without a break. So the responsibility in the series is huge,” Bhansali told Variety. “In Heeramandi 2, women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after partition and most settle in Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So the journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not the nawabs. So this is the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes,” Bhansali added.
