The Superior Electoral Court showed that the 2024 municipal elections in Manaus had the lowest number and proportion of banned candidates in the last 20 years. There were 17 candidates, according to the TSE.
Six candidates were blocked for lack of accountability for other election expenses. Failure to meet deadlines disqualified five others. Three were deemed ineligible. Two failed to provide the required documentation and one had a criminal conviction.
Of these, about six candidates appealed to the TRE-AM (Electoral Court of Amazonas) to try to contest the October 6 election, where the cases are being tried by the college.
In the last election in 2020, 53 out of 1,433 people were prevented from voting.
Another thing that is striking is the decline in the number of registered candidates in the Amazonas capital. In 2024, 833 candidates ran for City Council seats, seven candidates ran for mayor and seven candidates for vice mayor.
In previous years, such as in 2008, there were 842 candidates competing; in 2012, 929; in 2016, 1,429; and in the last election in 2020, 1,433.
