Donald Trump was hit by a bullet in the ear when a gunman opened fire at his rally in July.
In a video promoting her upcoming book, Melania Trump suggested that the assassination of her husband, former President Donald Trump, was part of some kind of conspiracy.
“Trying to end my husband’s life was a terrible, harrowing experience,” the former first lady said in a cryptic 34-second video posted to her X account on Tuesday.
He continued, “Now the silence around it feels heavy. I can’t help but wonder — why didn’t law enforcement arrest the shooter before speaking out? There’s definitely more to this story, and we need to uncover the truth.”
The video then prompted viewers to go to her website to pre-order her memoir, titled “Melania,” which comes out next month.
Melania Trump’s representatives did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment about her remarks and whether her new book reflects on her husband’s assassination attempt.
The former first lady has mostly stayed off the 2024 campaign trail. He skipped Trump’s June debate with President Joe Biden, which ultimately led to the president dropping out of the race altogether. He attended the final night of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, although unlike in 2016 and 2020, he did not deliver a speech.
The video was released just hours before Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump faces Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris in his first presidential debate.
The former president was struck in the ear by a bullet on July 13 after 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire while the former president was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The gunman — who was eventually shot dead by the Secret Service — fired eight bullets from the roof just minutes into the rally, leaving his ear bloody, one participant dead and two others injured.
Some right-wing Trump supporters, including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, have pushed conspiracy theories around the assassination attempt. Greene accused the Democratic Party of “murder” after the assassination of President Trump.
The FBI announced late last month that it still has not identified Crooks’ motive. That hasn’t stopped Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, from pushing the envelope by saying that an unspecified “they” tried to kill Donald Trump.
After the incident, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned after intense scrutiny and calls for his resignation.
Cheatle, testifying to Congress, called the assassination attempt “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades.”
There are several investigations into the assassination attempt, including a bipartisan task force made up of House lawmakers. Donald Trump has continued to hold outdoor events while speaking behind bulletproof glass. He has repeatedly said he would like to return to Butler for a rally before the election.
