Major worry for Germany number 1: Ter Stegen carried off the pitch in tears

It has been clear for a few weeks now: Marc-André ter Stegen is the new number 1 in the DFB team’s penalty box. Now the FC Barcelona goalkeeper has to be carried off the pitch after an awkward landing and there are fears of a serious injury.

National football goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a knee injury in FC Barcelona’s match against Villarreal FC. The 32-year-old landed on his right foot while defending a corner kick just before half-time and fell to the grass.

The Barca captain was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and in tears; coach Hansi Flick looked on with a worried expression. A diagnosis was still pending on Sunday evening. Ter Stegen’s side initially only reported the goalkeeper was replaced due to an injury.

The former Bundesliga professional has become the new number one in the German national team following the resignation of Manuel Neuer. The DFB selection will play in October’s Nations League in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against the Netherlands.
