Lula meets UN chief to discuss clean energy

New York – Before speaking at the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Tuesday (24/9), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

In his speech, Guterres said he was “honoured to work with President Lula to achieve maximum ambition, acceleration and cooperation” and said the two had “recently” met.

The minister spoke about ending the use of fossil fuels, which are a major pollutant, and warned that the energy transition must be “fast and fair”.

“Next year, every country must contribute energy,” he said.

Guterres also commented on the 29th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year.

“COP29 is just around the corner and will produce new funding targets. We must address this crazy situation, where we continue to honor polluters who are destroying the planet, while ordinary people pay the price for climate change,” he said.

This morning, Lula will deliver Brazil’s traditional inaugural speech in New York, United States.

The Brazilian president is expected to be followed by US President Joe Biden, who comes to the event with less prestige having abandoned the election in his country.
