Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany remembered the late basketball legend Dikembe Mutombo with emotional words. “He inspired and gave hope to a whole generation of Congolese youth around the world,” the Belgian wrote on social networks. Like Mutombo, the Bayern Munich coach’s father comes from what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The 2.18m tall Mutombo died of a brain tumor at the age of 58. “We watched the NBA because of him when we were growing up. Thanks to him we are proud of our origins. He showed us that we can dream big and succeed,” continued the 38-year-old Kompany. “We will miss him.”
Use it for charitable purposes
Mutombo played in the North American Professional League from 1991 to 2009 and has been a prominent figure for a long time. After his career ended, he devoted himself to charitable and humanitarian work, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “He showed us that we should value our roots. Not only with words, but also with actions,” Kompany wrote.
