There’s “something you probably already have” in your kitchen that can effectively get rid of patio weeds without having to aggressively pull them up.
While hot water, white vinegar, and salt can kill patio weeds, there is one ingredient you can overlook.
According to Gardening Story, which posted the video to YouTube, baking soda can “kill weeds naturally.”
Gardening Story elaborated: “Baking soda isn’t just for baking cookies or freshening up the fridge. It’s also a powerful, natural weed killer.”
Baking soda “works because it’s a salt that dries out and destroys plant cells.”
A gardening expert explained, “When you apply [baking soda] for weeds, it absorbs moisture and effectively kills weeds from the roots up.”
This natural weed killer is “safe for surrounding soil and plants when used properly.”
How to properly use baking soda to kill weeds
What you need:
- Baking soda
- Small flour sieve
- A spray bottle full of water
- Gardening gloves
The first thing you need to do is identify the weeds you want to target and then spray “a little water” on the weeds you want to get rid of.
“This helps the baking soda stick better,” the expert explained; put baking soda in a flour sieve (or colander).
“Then just baking soda on top of the leaves [of the damp weeds] and around the base of the weed.” Not much baking soda is needed, “just a light, even coating,” the expert suggested.
“Wait and see how the magic happens,” beamed the expert. “After a few days, you should start to see the weeds shrink and die.”
Stubborn weeds may need to reapply baking soda after a week. “It’s affordable, environmentally friendly and really functional,” the expert concluded.
