A food expert has recently taken to social media to reveal how to keep root vegetables – such as carrots and turnips – in the fridge for “weeks longer”. TikTokker @thespicymoustache is a pro when it comes to cooking, and she says a few simple tips can be really helpful in reducing waste.

The expert says that to keep root vegetables in the fridge for longer, all you have to do is grab a jar – preferably a folder – and fill it with water.

Then take the vegetables of your choice – she had chosen carrots, parsnips and radishes – and chop them into pieces small enough to fit in the container of your choice. Make sure you remove any stalks or stems.

Put them in a jar and cover with water. A pro says this simple trick helps keep them ‘crispy’ for longer – perfect for snacking when you need something quick.

This advice was echoed by the experts at The Kitchn, who also praised the importance of cutting the green parts first – especially when it comes to carrots, as these parts absorb all the moisture.

However, you can save them if you want to reduce food waste, as they can be used to make vegetable stock.

The experts continued: “Once the veggies are cut, all you have to do is put them in a container of water and store in the fridge to keep the carrots crisp and fresh.

“Whole carrots stay nice and crunchy in a cold water bath, and this is also a great way to store packaged baby carrots.”

Vegetables will last for ‘weeks’ when stored this way – perfect if you have a few in the fridge that you don’t get around to using.
