The Karnataka Cabinet on Tuesday appealed to the Central Government to release a sum of Rs 5,000 crore for the development of Karnataka’s Kalyana region. For this, the proposal was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The cabinet meeting was held in conjunction with the ‘Kalyana Karnataka Utsav’. The festival is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the liberation of the province from the Nizam’s rule and the granting of special status under Article 371 (J) of the Constitution. On this occasion, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “We have announced that Rs 5,000 crore will be given every year for the welfare sector of Karnataka. We have kept this amount in the budget for 2024-25. But for the last ten years, the Center has not given any funds to this sector No financial assistance is given to.
The meeting also gave approval to create a separate secretariat for Kalyana region of Karnataka. The region is also known as Hyderabad Karnataka and includes the districts of Bidar, Bellary, Vijayanagara, Kalaburagi, Kuppal, Raichur and Yadgir.
The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet approved a total of 56 proposals, of which 46 were for the Kalyana region of Karnataka. Projects worth Rs 12,692 crore are included under this proposal. Besides, plans to upgrade Bidar and Raichur Municipal Councils to Corporations have also been approved. The cabinet also approved water projects worth Rs 7,200 crore for all villages in Bidar and Kalaburagi districts. Half of the cost of this project will be claimed from the Center and the rest will be borne by the state government.
With this, the Cabinet decided to fill 17,439 vacant government posts in the Kalyana region of Karnataka. 45 new primary health centers and 31 community health centers will be established in the area and nine hospitals will be upgraded to taluk hospitals and two to district hospitals. The state government has also announced an investment plan of Rs 1,685 crore to make Kalaburagi a smart city. Additionally, a sum of Rs 200 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure development for Kalaburagi and Bellary Municipal Corporations under the Mahatma Gandhi Municipal Development Scheme 2.0.
The Chief Minister said that under the Kalyan Road Scheme, 1,150 km long rural roads will be constructed and an allocation of Rs 100 crore will be made available for the development of Anjanadri hills and tourist spots in Kuppal district. With these proposals and schemes, the Government of Karnataka is committed to the overall development of the Kalyan region of Karnataka and improving the quality of life of its citizens.
