Junkyard owner convicted of obstructing investigations into Mariel Franco case

The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) on Monday (30) sentenced Edilson Barbosa dos Santos, known as Orilha, to five years and 17 days in prison. Edelson, a junkyard owner, was held responsible for dismantling and disposing of the GM Cobalt vehicle used in the 2018 double murder of counselor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomez.

Indicted in August 2023 by the Specialized Action Group Against Organized Crime (GAECO), Edelson was found guilty of obstructing criminal investigations. According to the Public Prosecution, he prevented inspections of the car, which hindered the investigation of officials.

The ruling stressed that the destruction of the car made it difficult to identify the perpetrators and perpetrators of the crime, whose names were not revealed until six years after the murder. This case reaffirms the militia’s modus operandi, in which vehicles are destroyed after crimes are committed, making investigations difficult.
