Although almost 25 years have passed since Jeremy Clarkson drove the Ford Escort auctioned at Silverstone, the model has still been cherished by subsequent owners.
Before being put up for sale, it underwent extensive maintenance and minor improvements to the interior to give it a much fresher but still authentic look.
The result was that after lengthy bidding between drivers at the auction house above the International Paddock and online, the fast Ford sold for £67,500.
Although the Escort RS Cosworth fetched a tidy sum when it went under the hammer, it wasn’t the most expensive model sold by Iconic Auctioneers at the Silverstone Festival.
A 2001 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 SE Coupe with just 564 miles on the clock fetched a whopping £427,500 during the weekend event.
One of only 42 right-hand drive examples ever made, the Lamborghini uses its legendary 6.0-liter V12 engine, which helps it accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.95 seconds and on to a top speed of over 200 mph.
Nevertheless, motorists looking to buy their next set of wheels didn’t need deep pockets during the Silverstone auction, as a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 230E sold for just £6,750.
Although the luxury family sedan had no famous owners, it was in beautiful condition, no rust and various mechanical modifications.
With over 80,000 miles, the Merc was not the lowest mileage at the auction. However, with many examples having been used as taxis for over 200,000 miles, the German classic has plenty of life left in it.
