“If you need a pick-me-up, this one-pot wonder ticks a lot of boxes,” said Jamie Oliver.

“We’re talking crispy golden sausage, soft, steamed bagel, beautiful egg and melted cheese.”

A mouth-watering breakfast (or brunch) is the ideal Sunday morning treat – there’s no doubt about it, whether you follow Jamie Oliver’s weird method or eat a plain toasted sandwich.

“Yes, it’s a bit eccentric, but it’s also absolutely delicious,” Jamie Oliver promised, admitting that his recipe might seem a little odd.

Here’s how to quickly prepare Jamie Oliver’s “epic egg in the hole” breakfast treat in just 15 minutes.

Egg breakfast

Ingredients

  • One bagel
  • One sausage
  • One egg
  • 30 g of cheddar cheese
  • Tomato ketchup and/or brown sauce for serving (optional)

Method

Use your thumbs to make the center hole of the bagel the size of an egg yolk.

Squeeze the sausage out of its skin and press the meat into the other side of the bagel, leaving a gap where the hole is.

Place the bagel sausage side down in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat and cook for one minute.

Crack the egg into the hole, season with a pinch of black pepper, then add a splash of water to the pan and cover with a lid. Cook for eight minutes or until the sausage is crispy.

Remove the lid and coarsely grate half of the cheese and flip the bagel with a fish slice (i.e. a spatula).

Grate the rest of the cheese over the sausage, put the lid back on the pan and cook under the lid on a low heat for another four minutes or until the cheese has melted. Serve with tomato ketchup and/or brown sauce.

Simple exchanges

You can replace the bun with a bun or a piece of bread, but remember to make a hole in the middle.
