This Sunday, September 22, at exactly 9:44 a.m. (Brasilia time), spring begins in the southern hemisphere. This season continues until December 21 and is associated with the re-blooming of terrestrial flora. This means an increase in flower production, an activity that generates income for around 12 thousand people throughout Bahia and generates more than R$300 million per year, according to the Brazilian Flower Institute (Ibraflor).
The state is only responsible for 2% of Brazil’s production and ranks eighth in the national ranking of flower and ornamental plant cultivation. The percentage is relatively small, but Bahia stands out for the beauty and diversity of its specimens.
Orchids, roses, chrysanthemums, gerberas are among the many flowers grown in Bahia. In addition, tropical foliage and flowers, such as heliconia, alpine and anthurium strengthen this sector.
According to Ibraflor, cultivation is mostly carried out by farming families, but there are also large-scale farms. In Camaçari, for example, there is the largest orchid nursery in the state, which produces eighty thousand units of orchids produced in greenhouses, in various colors and formats, every year.
