Is Sunday, September 1, 2024 Trading Sunday?

The traditional first day of the school year, September 1st, falls on a Sunday this year. However, this does not affect the commercial restrictions in force on that day. On the first Sunday of September we will not be shopping in large stores or shopping malls because they will be closed by law, or at least most of them. Sunday, September 1, 2024 is a no-trade Sunday.

Where will we shop on Sunday, September 1, 2024?

This Sunday in September, despite the commercial restrictions, we will do some quick shopping for our needs. From the current ban on Sunday trading Some types of activities are exempt, including:

  • gas stations,
  • pharmacies and pharmacy outlets,
  • mail,
  • gastronomy,
  • flower shops.

We will also be able to shop at smaller stores and chains. However, opening hours may vary. Most of the time, these facilities are open on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and sometimes until 8:00 pm.

Will there be a shopping Sunday in September?

Unfortunately, this is bad news for Sunday shopping enthusiasts. In September, the legislator did not provide for shopping Sundays. Under the currently applicable regulations, in 2024 the Sunday trading ban will not apply to:

  • on the next two Sundays before Christmas Day,
  • on the Sunday immediately preceding the first day of Easter,
  • the last Sunday of January, April, June and August.

We will therefore have to wait until December for the next shopping Sundays. They will fall on December 15 and 22, 2024, respectively.

What are the restrictions on trading on Sundays?

The legal barriers result from the Law of 10 January 2018 on the limitation of trade on Sundays and public holidays and on certain other days. According to its provisions, on the last Sunday of July the following will be prohibited in commercial establishments:

  • trade and performance of trade-related activities,
  • entrust an employee or worker with work in commerce and activities related to commerce.

Change – two shopping Sundays per month

The return of commercial Sundays depends on the effect of ongoing legislative work. The draft amendment is in the Sejm, but deputies will not meet before mid-September. The next deliberations on Wiejska Street are scheduled for September 11-13, 2024. However, it is not known whether the plan for the first post-holiday deliberations will include work on this amendment.

Important

The amendment proposal involves important changes, the most important of which concerns increasing the number of Sunday auctions to two per month. The restrictions would not apply on the first and third Sundays of each month.
