Instagram Teen accounts will be available worldwide in January. They give parents of teens control over who their children can interact with and what content they see, as well as new ways to discover their interests.
Teens under 16 who sign up to Instagram from September 17 will automatically be assigned teen accounts, for now in the UK, US, Canada and Australia.
The service will notify teens from other countries about the process of migrating their accounts to Teen Accounts mode within 60 days.
Later this year, Instagram will begin offering accounts to teenagers in Poland and across the European Union.
“We understand parents’ concerns, which is why we’re transforming our apps for teens by offering new accounts for teens. This new experience is designed to give parents better support and confidence that their teens are safe and secure,” Instagram said in a blog post.

What do teen Instagram accounts offer you?
Some of the new built-in protections for teen accounts on Instagram include automatic activation of private accounts, message restrictions and content limits, a new Night Mode feature that silences notifications at night, and additional parental supervision tools that allow parents to see who their child is talking to.
Teens under 16 can only change these settings with parental consent. By enabling parental controls, parents can also decide when and for how long their teens can use Instagram.
Additionally, the app will remind the young user to leave it after 60 minutes of use. Controlling screen time will be easier thanks to sleep mode, which is activated at night between 10pm and 7am. It will silence notifications during the night and send automatic replies to private messages.
“We’ll also automatically enable the most restrictive version of our anti-harassment feature, Hidden Words, so that offensive words and phrases are filtered out of teen comments and requests for consent to receive messages,” Instagram says.
According to the results of the Mediapanel study prepared by Wirtualnemedia.pl, in July 2024, 14.49 million Polish Internet users used Instagram (which gave a reach of 48.8%), spending an average of 5 hours, 27 minutes and 32 seconds.
In the last quarter, Metaplatforms were visited by an average of 3.27 billion Internet users every day, compared to 3.14 billion a year ago and 2.88 billion two years ago. Average revenue per user increased from $10.42 to $11.89.
