The prefecture of Martinique announced, Monday, September 23, in a press release, the partial extension of the curfew until Thursday. It will be extended to the popular district of Sainte-Thérèse, in Fort-de-France. The curfew has been in place since September 18, following the violence that accompanied the protest movement against the high cost of living in the French department in the Caribbean.
“This is a relatively temporary ban” The travel curfew will be in effect from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. in certain districts of Fort-de-France and the neighboring commune of Lamentin, from Monday to Thursday morning.
The prefect confirmed the extension of the curfew in the Sainte-Thérèse district, which has been the epicentre of the unrest, at his own request. “to support the return of calm and tranquility in this sector”. He added that “Security forces will be deployed on a large scale to ensure the safety of people and property.”
