The agency also seized four tractors and a backhoe in the area. The action, carried out in collaboration between Ibama and the Public Ministry of State, other environmental inspection bodies and specialized police, identified 35 deforestation alerts in the Bahian municipalities of Belmonte, Santa Luzia, Canavieiras and Una.
Tractors and backhoes were caught operating in the forest, in Santa Luzia. According to the Federal Government, the person responsible has damaged more than 25 hectares of crops and was fined.
“These cities have attracted farmers and ranchers from Espírito Santo in search of cheaper land to expand their activities. The problem is that many of them do not respect environmental laws,” said André Santos, a federal environmental agent at the Ibama Technical Unit in Eunápolis (BA).
