Polish volleyball players have become Olympic runners-up in Paris. They reached the podium after 48 years. “I dedicate this medal to God, family and fans,” Wilfredo Leon told PAP. He expressed hope that perhaps one day his children “will be more successful at the Olympics than their father.”
This result tastes good and the other doesn’t. We know that these are the Olympic Games and every medal counts. However, we lost the last game and it’s difficult for me.
– said the host of the Polish team.
God and family
According to Leon, it’s not that there was no joy at all, but he was aiming for gold.
Coach Grbic’s work was very difficult. We did something we had been waiting for for many years. We will see how I get this result here in a few days.
– he said.
Leon believes that the French could have been defeated better and perhaps the Italians were even stronger than them in Paris.
After a difficult year at the club, after an injury, I gave everything I had here. I don’t think I was that bad. I feel a little bit like we made history, but we also entered it with silver and not gold.
– he analyzed.
When asked who he would dedicate the medal to, he replied that it would be God first, because “he is the biggest star that made this medal possible”.
Secondly, to the family, which is the most important thing, and thirdly, to the fans.
– Leon said.
The fans have been waiting for this medal for a long time, they really needed it. They can go home with peace of mind because we finally gave them success at the Olympics. I hope that more and more children and young people in Poland will attend volleyball academies. I know very well how many people we need to improve in the sport. That is why I started this project with the Toruń club. Every child who starts today can one day also have the opportunity to represent the country.
– he pointed.
“Sport taught me openness
Answering the question about what the sport has given him, he said that it makes him a much more open person.
I used to be a closed person, but sports have taught me to be open. It’s much easier for me to communicate with players and other people. Sports have also given me discipline, because without it you can’t do anything here. You need to have a strong spirit to achieve anything in sports. I’m going to see my children tomorrow. We’ll hug, we’ll have long talks, I’ll show them this medal. Let the children see this record that their father won. We’ll see what they say about it. My children are young, but they already train a lot. Maybe one day they’ll do better than their father in the Olympics.
– summed up the host of the Polish team with a smile.
The French were crowned Olympic champions for the second time in a row, and three years ago they also won gold in Tokyo. Poland had been waiting for a medal in this discipline at the Olympics for 48 years.
