How to stop cats pooing in gardens ‘godsend number one’ with food scraps

Cats are one of Britain’s most loved pets. However, they tend to spoil and relieve themselves in neighboring gardens.

Cat poop can wreak havoc in gardens and damage plants because it carries harmful bacteria.

Becky took to her TikTok page @alittlecotswoldhome and shared her tried and tested method that works to repel cats.

Becky started the video by saying, “Ok, so here’s my #1 tip if, like us, you have problems with neighborhood cats trying to use your lovely planters or pots as a blooming litter box.

“Coffee grounds! Literally take your coffee grounds to crush them and put them on the ground. Apparently cats don’t like the smell.”

Strong aromas repel cats. Fresh coffee smells fantastic to humans, but cats have a much more developed sense of smell.

Cats have 200 million scent receptors in their noses (compared to our measly 5 million), which means that every scent is amplified and much more powerful to them.

Becky continued: “Since we started doing this we’ve had no more problems [with cats]. It’s also supposed to be really good for your plants too.

“Let me know if you try this or already do this. It’s been a godsend for us. No more cat poop.”

For those concerned about the risks to cats from using coffee grounds, Becky responded to the comments: “Small risk. We ourselves have a cat and after doing a lot of research we decided this was the best way to exterminate without harm.

Other TikTok users shared their thoughts on this tip in the comments. @Chloe said: “Good way to keep cats away without hurting them. I understand it’s annoying but it’s cruel to hurt an animal, this is a great option.”

@snippetsofem wrote: “I’ve read that cats think it smells like their poo so they hate it. Lots of cafes give it out in bulk as fertilizer too.”

@sashalucy91 commented: “I already do this because I know it’s good for the soil, but I had no idea it kept cats away!”

@Lucyjsampson: “I can’t tell you how much I needed to see this today. Found a cat pooping in our garden this morning and our indoor cat is not happy! Thanks!”
