Limestone can be difficult to clean because it is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, which sticks to surfaces and resists most cleaning agents.
Luckily, Nathaniel Jamesson, an expert at cleaning service Get It Cleaned, has shared one simple kitchen accessory that can declutter your toilet without having to scrub it for years.
He said: “One of the most cost-effective and effective cleaning products to help get rid of limescale in the toilet is lemon juice.”
It may seem strange, but lemon juice can naturally dissolve calcium carbonate from limestone because it is acidic and is also slightly abrasive, and it is easy to remove without scrubbing.
How to clean limescale from a toilet with lemon juice
All you have to do is pour lemon juice into the toilet bowl and then leave it unflushed for at least 10 minutes, but it may take longer depending on how much limescale there is.
When the time is up, gently wipe the toilet seat with the sponge on the toilet brush to remove the now dissolved limescale.
The residue should come off easily, then all you have to do is flush the toilet and it should be sparkling clean again.
Nathaniel said: “Besides being quite cheap and effective, lemon juice is a natural product that does not pose any health risks due to the harsh chemicals used in some special limescale cleaners.”
What else can you use to remove limescale?
If the limescale is partially hardened or you don’t have lemon juice, another way to clean the toilet is with cola, which may be strange, but it is very effective.
Nathaniel said: “It is surprising to some that its cleansing properties are not just a myth. In reality, cola is one of the most effective and inexpensive solutions for removing limescale from the toilet.
“Just open the Coke bottle and guide it around the edge of the toilet bowl. Let the Cola sit and work its magic as an effective limescale remover.
Cola is acidic and fizzy, both of which help loosen limescale. When you flush the toilet, most of it should come out without you having to scrub it.
Your toilet should be lime-free without too much effort or time using only natural products that you probably already had in your kitchen.
