How to remove mold from silicone sealant without bleaching or scrubbing

Mold thrives in warm, humid conditions, and bathrooms are inherently humid due to their operation.

While it might seem logical to assume that the waterproof properties of silicone sealant would prevent mold growth, over time the sealant can peel away from the surface, allowing water to collect behind it.

If the surfaces are not dried after each use, mold spores can settle in these moist areas and multiply. However, when it comes to eliminating mold, resorting to harsh chemicals is not always the best option. The cleaning gurus at Fantastic Services warn.

Instead, they recommend two “best natural cleaners” to help households remove mold from bathroom sealants.

1. Baking soda

Baking soda is a very effective mold remover when mixed with a little water to form a thick paste.

Apply this to the moldy area, let it sit, then scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse.

Bicarbonate of soda is a mild abrasive that is excellent at removing dirt and stains without damaging it, and it also acts as a deodorizer to remove odors.

2. White vinegar

White vinegar, a versatile cleaner, is also a “great mold remover.” The plumbing experts at PlumbNation think so, claiming it’s also a “great mold killer.”

They explained, “Its acidity makes mold growth impossible, and vinegar can clean up to 82 percent of mold species.”

A 568ml bottle of white vinegar retails for just 35p in Sainsbury’s or can be bought in bulk as a 5 liter bottle on Amazon for £5.99, down from £6.99 currently.

If you want a homemade anti-mold solution, spray vinegar on the moldy areas and wipe them with warm water after an hour. Make sure the area is completely dried to prevent mold from returning.

Keep a bottle of vinegar in the bathroom to regularly spray mold-prone areas, and vinegar is said to be so effective that “mold will never grow” where it is applied.

If you’re dealing with persistent mold, try creating a thick paste of vinegar and enough bicarbonate of soda. Let this sit overnight and repeat the wiping process.

Always wipe the surfaces of the bathtub or shower dry so that the silicone seals do not mold. this removes the humid atmosphere that mold loves so much.

Also, don’t forget proper ventilation in bathrooms, a crack in the window or a whirr of a fan can do wonders against mold.
