A simple carrot storage can keep vegetables fresh and crunchy for weeks.
TikTok user @soniasuperkitchen_food1 explained that carrots should not be stored loose in the vegetable box as this will cause them to “shrink and dry out” in no time.
Instead, you can make them “last up to a month” using one item you probably already have at home.
Walking viewers through the hack, Sonia said: “First, get the carrots, wash the carrots and make sure they’re well dried. Put the carrots in a ziplock bag and put them in your vegetable compartment of the fridge.”
Sonia then returned to the carrots two weeks later and said they still looked “very fresh”.
Her video has garnered over 21,000 likes, with many commenting to thank Sonia for her advice. One wrote: “Wow thanks for the hack.” Another said: “You’ve been saving lives since 1990.”
Others left their own suggestions in the comments, including one user who said: “Put them in water.” Sonia replied, “You have to change the water every 3-4 days.”
Another user said that if the carrots are submerged in a “tight glass container” in the refrigerator, they can last more than a month.
Martha Stewart mentions Nathan Lyon on her website about storing carrots. And the pair seem to agree with Sonia.
His website says, “To properly store unpeeled whole carrots, place them in a sealed plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator,” says Nathan Lyon, chef, cookbook author and host. Lyon in the kitchen at Discovery Health. As with other produce, avoid washing carrots before storing, as excess moisture accelerates spoilage. “Be sure to remove the greens before storing to preserve them [existing] moisture and sugar content of the carrot,” Lyon adds.”
Regarding peeled carrots, it adds: “Whole peeled carrots should be stored in the same way as unpeeled ones. However, it is good to note that the peel protects the carrot from moisture, so peeling the carrot before storing speeds up the drying process,” says Lyon.
