As we approach September, the most popular birthday month of the year, many are preparing for leftover birthday cake, which means they need a good way to keep leftovers fresh.
Vlatka Lake, storage specialist at self-storage operator Space Station, told Express.co.uk how to preserve its flavor and texture for as long as possible.
And most importantly, the expert told why you should not store the cake in the refrigerator.
He said: “There are a few different ways to store cake effectively and it usually depends on the type of cake and the ingredients.
“In most cases, the general rule applies that the cake should be stored at room temperature and in a cake tin for short-term storage, plastic containers should be avoided if possible.
“If your cake is topped with a layer of buttercream, make sure the container you choose is airtight to protect the best flavors. With this method, the cake stays moist and tasty for up to a week.
Another tip from the expert is to avoid storing cakes and cookies in the same container, as the moisture in the cake can make the cookies soggy.
Interestingly, the refrigerator is not an ideal place to store cakes. Refrigerating cakes can make them go stale faster than when stored at room temperature.
The exception is cakes that contain perishable ingredients, such as fresh fruit or custard, and which should be stored in the refrigerator. Be sure to cover these cakes with plastic wrap, foil or put them in a box to prevent them from drying out.
For longer storage, and we’re talking really long term, freezing is the best option, according to Lake.
To keep the cake fresh for a long time, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil or put it in a freezer-safe container before putting it in the freezer.
When you’re ready to enjoy a slice, let the cake thaw at room temperature, making sure you have space on the counter to thaw properly.
“Freezing can keep a cake fresh and safe to eat for up to 6 months, depending on the ingredients,” Lake added.
