How to grow bigger and better rose flowers with one food scrap gardener

Blooming roses is what every gardener wants, but there is a clever trick to encourage even more impressive blooms.

Jocelyn, a gardening enthusiast and the mind behind the Reading Residence, was thrilled to discover that her roses could benefit from a surprising household waste as fertilizer – banana peels.

Used banana peels can give roses a fair amount of growth, ensuring stronger development.

Delighted at the discovery, Jocelyn exclaimed, “I found that if I feed them with banana peels, it promotes bigger and better blooms.”

She also learned, “Apparently the potassium in the soil is really good for them, so I thought I’d better get to it, especially considering how much banana the kids consume, I’m never short of banana peels!”

Although it may sound strange at first, throwing banana peels into the soil around rose bushes in the summer can release essential potassium.

This essential nutrient plays a key role in the movement of water and other vital supplies in the plant, resulting in more abundant flowers.

Potassium is not only flower power, it strengthens the rose’s ability to cope with stress and strengthens its natural defenses. A strong immune system is crucial in fighting off common fungal diseases to keep your rose bush healthy and vibrant.

But the goodness doesn’t stop at potassium, as banana peels are loaded with nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, all of which are known for supporting root systems and boosting flowering, which can mean more blooms for you to enjoy.

The method couldn’t be simpler. Start by collecting banana peels in a container until they start to turn brown, cut them into smaller pieces and bury them in the ground near the roses. Make sure you don’t pull any unwanted critters.

The pods break down naturally and gradually enrich the soil with nutritious goodness over time, giving your flowers a welcome boost to flourish.

Jocelyn said: “I kept them on for a few days so they had started to break down and then I cut them back a bit so I could spread them amongst all my roses.

“Then I dug up a bit of dirt from the base of each rose, sprinkled some bark and covered them back. Simple!”

Roses thrive when fed with banana peels every two weeks, making sure you water them well afterwards.

Gardening enthusiasts flooded Jocelyn’s comments section with praise for her brilliant rose care secret and vowed to try it themselves. One user exclaimed: “How easy is that? We eat at least 12 bananas a week here and usually just drop them in the compost. I’m going to start adding them to the roses now!”

Another follower expressed her excitement by commenting: “What a great tip! I didn’t know that, I’m hoping to get roses this year (I’m a very novice gardener) so I’m going to try this!”

A third added: “Wow, I love tips like this! Thanks Jocelyn. I only have a few roses but it’s going to be bananas for pudding tonight and rose feeding tomorrow!”
