Military speeches in New York, massive strikes in Beirut. In two almost simultaneous moves, on Friday 27 September, Israel demonstrated its determination to divide Hezbollah in Lebanon, following its treatment of Hamas in Gaza. Before the UN General Assembly, Benjamin Netanyahu closed the door on diplomacy, preferring the armed path, without restraint or compromise. Not long after, the Lebanese capital shook. Israeli bombing in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyé targeted Hezbollah’s underground headquarters, causing the destruction of above-ground buildings. On Saturday morning, the Israeli army claimed to have “disappeared” the leader of the Shiite militia, Hassan Nasrallah.
