iOS 18 is coming to iPhone 16 on September 16, Apple revealed today. That’s exactly one week from today and ahead of the September 20 launch date of the new iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which will all come with iOS 18 pre-installed. The update will roll out to all supported iPhones and should be available to anyone who wants it on the same day — without a multi-week slog from Apple (see that, Google?).
Apple Intelligence will not be part of iOS 18. The first batch of features will arrive as part of iOS 18.1 (and iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1), which will ship in October. The first batch of features will be available only in US English, with an expansion promised in December to include localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK. Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will also be supported next year.
What AI features are you getting in October? Writing tools, creating videos based on descriptions in Memories in Photos, searching for specific photos using natural language, searching for specific moments in videos, Cleanup, which removes things or people from photos, audio recording, transcription, and summarization in the Notes and Phone apps, summarized notifications, Priority Messages in Mail, email summaries, Smart Reply in Mail, and a redesigned Siri that supports typing and is more “natural” and “responsive.” Siri can also answer “thousands of questions” about the features and settings of your Apple devices.
Then, “later this year and in the coming months,” you’ll get Image Playground to generate images and emojis, Image Wand to generate images from sketches, and Siri will use your personal context to deliver intelligence tailored to you. It’ll also be screen-aware and able to take hundreds of new actions across Apple and third-party apps. ChatGPT is also coming in this wave.
Apple Intelligence technology will be available only on the recently launched iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac computers with M1 processors or later.
