The main cause of the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was poor weather conditions, including thick fog, Iranian state television reported on Sunday, presenting the final report of the investigation into the case.
Ebrahim Raisi, who was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in May, when the helicopter he was traveling in crashed in a mountainous region near the border with Azerbaijan.
The Iranian delegation was returning from the inauguration ceremony of the Araks River dam, on the border between Iran and Azerbaijan. The accident occurred in heavy fog in a mountainous region in the northwest of the country.
Bad weather conditions prevented rescue teams from quickly reaching the area where the plane crashed. A total of eight people died in the disaster.
“The main cause of the helicopter crash was complicated weather conditions in the region” – was written in the final report of the investigation, quoted by Iranian television.
The report was prepared by a special committee appointed by the Iranian military to investigate the disaster.
Back in May, the armed forces announced that they had found no evidence of a coup or attack, Reuters recalled.
