Heavy rain hits Japan’s quake zone

In Japan, the western part of the country hit by a devastating earthquake a few months ago is under threat from severe storms. The National Weather Service issued a warning Saturday of heavy rain.

In Wajima City on the Noto Peninsula, many homes were submerged in water, local media reported. At least one person was missing, according to the affected Ishikawa Prefecture. More than a dozen rivers overflowed their banks. Rainfall in Noto was more than 120 millimeters per hour, it said.

As several dams were affected by a major earthquake on New Year’s Day, authorities urged residents to evacuate immediately. The area was devastated by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on New Year’s Day. 260 people died.

Many people are still living in emergency accommodation at the moment. They have also been affected by flooding, public broadcaster NHK reported. Weather authorities warned residents over the weekend about the danger of landslides and flooding in low-lying areas, including in the northeast of the island kingdom.
