– Professor Obirek spoke so beautifully diplomatically about Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz – comments Magdalena Rigamonti, host of “Rachunek Conscience”.
— Well, I have a score to settle with him, so I don’t miss the opportunity to say what I think of him, because he is a great plague on the Church. – replies the ex-monk.
– But on the other hand, he managed to create a structure, an organized group – I won’t say what – alongside the Pope, which functioned for many, many years. You have to be intelligent, professor, to do something like that.
— No, I believe that just as the parasite only develops because it has a favorable environment, the conditions for the development of this group that holds power around John Paul II were created by the Pope himself. Please note that the Pope (John Paul II – editor’s note) has been to Poland nine times. Francis, this is the eleventh year of his pontificate, has never been to Argentina. The Pope has created a true “Polish mafia” in the Vatican. As far as I know, there are not many Argentines around the Pope – explains Prof. Peeling.
John Paul II may be held responsible
Prof. Stanisław Obirek is a cultural anthropologist, historian and theologian. In 1976, he joined the Jesuit Order, taught at the university and was editor-in-chief of the magazine “Życie Duchowe”. His critical comments on the activities of John Paul II aroused the dissatisfaction of his superiors. In 2005, he left the Order and is a full professor at the University of Warsaw.
In an interview with Magdalena Rigamonti from Onet, podcast host “Examination of Conscience” talks about how difficult it was to criticize the Polish Pope.
– In fact, the end of the 1990s, the beginning of the 21st century in Poland and to say something like John Paul II – the golden calf of the Polish Church, was worse than heresy, it was an insult to majesty – notes Prof. Peeling.
— It was a process of maturation not to criticize the Pope, but to criticize Karol Wojtyła, who transferred to Rome all his experience and phobias of leftism and Bolshevism, he heard such conspiracies everywhere, especially in South America. I understood that this is a very specific Polish vision of the world, he adds.
The Catholic Church transformed into the Polish People’s Republic
Prof. Obirek notes that At that time, the allegations against the Pope regarding the cover-up of pedophiles were not widely discussed.or extend a protective umbrella over notorious sex offenders. Today, society is able to critically verify the facts of the pope’s pontificate.
— I am not on any anti-papal crusade. I am just saying why this Church, which really seduced me with many attributes of an institution of the 1970s, which was an alternative to the gray reality of the Polish People’s Republic, why this Church became a Polish People’s Republic – explains the former Jesuit.
In an interview with Magdalena Rigamonti the scientist also returns to his childhood experiences. A few years ago, he revealed that he was molested by priests in his youth.
What is “Examination of Conscience”?
Church. To some, it is a discredited institution that cynically uses religion as a tool to make money. To others, it is the rock and source of all goodness and love. “Examination of Conscience” is not just a podcast about the Church. This is a podcast about people whose careers, and sometimes even their entire lives, have been (or still are) influenced by the institution of the Catholic Church. If you have no religious feelings, be sure to listen. If you do, listen even more.
