The verdict, reached by a grand jury of citizens who participated in the investigation alongside prosecutors, added to the long list of charges he has faced in New York and Los Angeles twice since 2017. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged him with “one count of sexual assault on a woman at a hotel in lower Manhattan between April 29 and May 6, 2006,” according to the statement.
More than 80 women
“Thanks to this survivor who bravely testified, Harvey Weinstein is now charged with a new allegation of violent sexual assault,” the judge thundered. The fall of the former powerful producer of American cinema triggered a global shockwave, liberating the voices of many victims and exposing sexual and gender-based violence against women.
The former Miramax studios boss is set to face a retrial in New York after an appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction for the rape of actress Jessica Mann and sexual assault of co-producer Mimi Haleyi in late April. The surprise reversal was seen as an insult and a step backwards for the #MeToo movement.
According to an AFP journalist in the courtroom, a November 12 date was mentioned but the prosecutor deemed that “unrealistic” on Wednesday and the judge scheduled the next procedural hearing for October 2. More than 80 women, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd, have accused Harvey Weinstein of harassment, sexual assault or rape.
