Harry Potter star Maggie Smith has died aged 89

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. He died peacefully in hospital on the morning of September 27. “He was a very private person and was ultimately surrounded by his friends and family,” his two sons said in a statement.

“She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their wonderful mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their tireless care and kindness during his final days.”

The two-time Oscar winner played Professor Minerva McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” films and is also known for her role in the television series “Downton Abbey.”
