Cutting hair shorter is often the most popular hairstyle for older women. Stylish pixie cuts are known to accentuate cheekbones and flatter face shapes.
But Gary Douglas, founder of Hail Your Hair, has revealed an alternative for anyone dealing with the strain of aging locks.
Speaking to Express.co.uk earlier, the hair expert emphasized that gray tones are often not the main annoyance for mature women, but rather thinning, brittle hair.
He explained: “When women enter menopause, they are likely to experience a drop in estrogen and progesterone levels. This can cause hair thinning and hair loss.”
Luckily, it’s easily remedied with a simple style change, and it doesn’t have to mean super short.
Talking about the most appropriate hairstyles for aging hair, Gary emphasized the appeal of bobs and layers.
“This classic haircut can look very flattering on older women when cut and styled correctly,” she noted.
Gary said: “The bob style with layers, gentle waves and texture adds a touch of youth and adds volume.”
However, the bob haircut should be approached with caution. The hair expert advised: “Avoid bangs with longer pieces in the front as this draws more attention to the neck area, where you can see signs of aging first.”
As for those who prefer not to differ in the length of their hair, Gary advised not to sport long without layers for parents.
“Because our hair gets thinner as we age, older women may want to avoid very long hair without layers,” she said.
Gary added: “Adding light and gradual layers to long hair adds freshness and movement, helping your hair look healthier and giving you a more youthful appearance.”
“That said, everyone is different and we all have different style preferences, so it’s always best to ask your hairdresser for advice if you’re considering a major change.”
Maintaining a new hairstyle is important for people of all ages, but even more so for those with brittle and thin hair.
Gary pointed out that in addition to neglecting nourishing strands with conditioner, air-drying locks naturally is one of the biggest hair care mistakes.
She explained that it’s a common misconception that “air drying your hair is better than using a hair dryer.”
He said: “When hair is wet, it swells in size and can absorb a huge amount of water compared to its weight. This makes the hair strands weaker and more prone to damage and breakage.”
To avoid this, she recommended drying your hair with a hair dryer using best heat protection practices. that is, using a lower temperature and keeping the nozzle at a safe distance from the strands.
