Google Photos Gets New Feature That Lets Users Block A Person’s Face In Memories

Google Photos — the media manager on Android devices — is gaining a new feature that lets users not only hide, but completely block a person from their media collection. The company says this could prove useful when users don’t want to see a person in their media collection. Memories tab. While a similar feature was previously available in Google Photos, it only allowed users to hide them in specific sections of the app. The new feature is available for Android phones right now in the Google Photos app.

Google Photos Blocking Feature

According to the new Google support page, the new Block option has been added next to Show less. As the name suggests, it allows the user to block a person’s face (e.g. an ex) from being included in the Google Photos Memories carousel. While its functionality is similar to the “show less” option, the blocking feature is a more extensive option.

Google Photos now has an option to block hiding faces

Google says that if users choose the “show less” option, the person’s face won’t appear in Memories, but it may still appear in group photos attached to Memories. The blocking option, on the other hand, hides them from Memories entirely, including group photos with other people. Here’s what you need to do if you want to block someone on Google Photos:

  1. Open Google Photos and click the profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. To choose Google Photos Settings option, touch Preferences and then Memories.
  3. Below Show less option, users will now see a new Blocked bookmark. Tap on Select faces and then select the face you don’t want to appear in the Memories carousel.
  4. Return to the Google Photos home page and you will no longer see that person’s face.

Gadgets 360 was able to verify the availability of this feature in Google Photos on Android. However, it was not available on the iOS platform at the time. While this feature can block a person’s face, Google says it’s not perfect. Users can also choose to hide certain faces in their Highlights.
