A giant sunfish washed up on a beach in the US state of Oregon this week. Described by experts as one of the strangest species in the ocean, it is the third such incident in the region.
The fish, which appeared to have been dead for some time, measured almost 2.15 m (7.9 ft) long. The largest specimen of the species ever seen was caught in Portugal at 3.25 m (10.9 ft) long and 3.6 m (12.8 ft) tall, and weighed 2.8 tonnes.
The deaths of these sunfish are still a mystery to experts who are looking for the cause. According to researchers, factors related to climate change and ocean temperatures are a possibility.
