The controls will cover all land borders to combat threats related to Islamist terrorism and cross-border crime. Reducing the flow of illegal migrants is also an important objective. As Faeser emphasised, Germany must increase surveillance of its borders against “serious threats”. The decision to introduce controls has been forwarded to the European Commission.
30,000 people were returned
Data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior shows that more than 30,000 people have been turned away at the German border since October 2023. Border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland were already in place.
